7. The elbow connection

The same five-letter word can describe your elbow, a pizza place, or a cannabis cigarette. What is it?

Someone points to the burnt end of a cannabis cigarette and names an insect. What five-letter word did they use?

They played against other opponents. The question never says all their games were against each other.

Let everyone see the spelling for these. You can copy just the question into a group chat and wait for the guesses before sending the answer.

What five-letter English word becomes “shorter” when you add two letters to the end?

M. Count the letters in the written words.

Harder stoner riddles for the friends who want to work it out

Give these a little time. The answers explain the reasoning so everyone can check the solution.

25. The mislabeled snacks

Three opaque containers hold ordinary chips, ordinary pretzels, and a mixture of both. One label says “Chips,” one says “Pretzels,” and one says “Mixed.” Every label is wrong. You may choose one container and take out exactly one piece without looking inside. Which container lets you identify all three correctly?

Reveal the answer to riddle 25

Choose the container labeled “Mixed.” Its label is wrong, so it contains only one kind of snack.

If you pull out a chip, that container is the chips container. The one labeled “Pretzels” must then be mixed, because it cannot contain pretzels and the chips container is already identified. The remaining container holds pretzels. If you pull out a pretzel, reverse the reasoning.

26. Who ate the last cookie?

Exactly one of Ari, Bea, and Cal ate the last cookie. Ari says, “Bea ate it.” Bea says, “I didn’t eat it.” Cal says, “Ari didn’t eat it.” Exactly one of those three statements is true. Who ate the cookie?

Reveal the answer to riddle 26

Ari. That makes Ari’s statement false, Bea’s true, and Cal’s false. If Bea or Cal had eaten it, two of the statements would be true.

27. A pair in two colors

A drawer contains four black socks and four green socks, all loose and mixed together. Without seeing or feeling any difference between colors, what is the fewest socks you must take to guarantee at least one of each color?

Reveal the answer to riddle 27

Five socks. Your first four could all be the same color. The fifth must be the other color because there are only four of each.

28. The lighter coin

Eight coins look identical. Seven weigh exactly the same, and one weighs less. You have a balance scale that compares two groups. What is the fewest weighings that will guarantee you find the lighter coin?

Reveal the answer to riddle 28

Two weighings. First weigh three coins against three.

If they balance, the lighter coin is among the two left out. Compare those two. If the first weighing tips, take the lighter group of three and compare two of its coins. If those balance, the third is the light coin. Otherwise, the lighter side identifies it.

One weighing has only three possible outcomes, so it cannot distinguish all eight possibilities by itself.

29. The two doors

One door leads to a party and the other to a broom closet. Two robots know which is which. One always tells the truth and the other always lies, but you don’t know which robot is which. You can ask either robot one question. How do you find the party?

Reveal the answer to riddle 29

Ask either robot, “Which door would the other robot say leads to the party?” Then choose the other door.

The truthful robot accurately reports the liar’s wrong answer. The lying robot gives a false version of the truthful robot’s correct answer. Either way, the indicated door is the closet.

30. Nine minutes from now

You have a four-minute sand timer and a seven-minute sand timer. Both start full and run steadily. With no clock, how can you measure exactly nine minutes starting now?

Reveal the answer to riddle 30

Start both timers together, then use the following flips.

  1. At four minutes, the four-minute timer empties. Flip it.
  2. At seven minutes, the seven-minute timer empties. Flip it.
  3. At eight minutes, the four-minute timer empties again. Immediately flip the seven-minute timer, which has been running for one minute.
  4. The sand now above the neck of the seven-minute timer takes one minute to fall. When it empties, nine minutes have passed since the start.

31. The three-digit code

A lock has a three-digit code. The first digit is twice the last digit. The middle digit is one more than the last digit. All three digits add up to nine. What is the code?

Reveal the answer to riddle 31

432. Four is twice two, three is one more than two, and 4 + 3 + 2 = 9.

To derive it, call the last digit x. The sum becomes 2x + (x + 1) + x = 9, so x = 2.

  1. Choose one riddle from each section.

  3. Let each player give one final answer before opening the reveal.
